150 Minutes a Week

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise per week.

Depending on your interests and activity level, this can include:

  • Brisk walking
  • Cycling
  • Swimming, or
  • Running.

The AHA also suggests making time for muscle-strengthening activities at least two days per week.

Benefits of Physical Activity

Besides reducing the risk of heart disease, exercise can improve overall health and well-being. Regular physical activity can help manage weight, lower blood pressure, and improve cholesterol levels. Exercise can also reduce the risk of certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, and depression.

Before You Start a New Exercise Program

While you know your body the best, visiting your doctor before exercising can still be helpful because they may be able to identify things problems in your body that are difficult to self-diagnose. By talking to your doctor, they can advise you on what type of exercise program may or may not be the best fit based on your physical ability.
