DIABETES Management
Diabetes affects over 34 million Americans, and 1 in 5 don't even know they have it!
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar. If left untreated, it can lead to heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.
Who's Most at Risk
Diabetes affects older adults the most; in fact, 26% of Americans over 65 have diabetes.
But it's also becoming more common among younger age groups with a dramatic rise in the number of children and adolescents diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in recent years.
Certain populations are also at a higher risk for developing diabetes:
- African Americans
- Hispanic/Latino Americans, and
- Native Americans
These populations are at higher risk of developing diabetes than non-Hispanic white Americans.
What's more, if you are overweight or obese, have a family history of diabetes, or have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, you're also at increased risk.
Symptoms for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes:
- Frequent urination
- Unusual thirst
- Extreme hunger
- Unusual weight loss
- Extreme fatigue
- Irritability
Other signs of Type 2 diabetes:
- Frequent infections
- Blurred vision
- Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal
- Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
- Recurring infections of the skin, gums or bladder
Take Steps Now to Lower Your Risk
If you have a family history of diabetes or are obese or overweight, it's time to get checked and take steps to prevent or manage the condition.
This includes a healthy diet, staying physically active, and getting regular check-ups with a healthcare provider.
