Silver Cross Named to the 2022 Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals® List for the 10th Time

Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox has been named today to the 2022 Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals® list. This is the 10th time Silver Cross has been recognized with this honor as one of the top performing hospitals in the U.S. The annual list was published today by Fortune.

100 Top Hospitals-2022Merative, a data, analytics and technology partner for the health industry, has identified the top hospitals from a rigorous evaluation of 2,650 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the U.S. The annual list recognizes excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health. Merative, formerly IBM Watson Health, established the list to help identify best practices that may help other healthcare organizations achieve consistent, balanced, and sustainable high performance.

“At Silver Cross, we’re committed to delivering an unrivaled healthcare experience for every patient, every time,” said President/CEO Ruth Colby. “Earning national recognition for the work we do on a daily basis is truly remarkable and a testament to our entire Silver Cross team who always put patients first. We’re humbled to be recognized as one of the nation’s best hospitals for the 10th time and the third year running, but we won’t stop there. We’ll continue to advance, improve and deliver the healthcare our patients and our community deserve.”

Since its opening in 1895, Silver Cross has grown to a 650,000-square-foot, 324-bed facility on a 130-acre campus that also includes an Ambulatory Surgery Center, Endoscopy Center, Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital and Silver Cross Urgent Care. The hospital operates several off-site physician offices through Silver Cross Medical Group and Premier Suburban Medical Group.

Silver Cross also partners with leading academic providers including the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, UChicago Medicine for neurosciences and stroke care, and Rush University Medical Center for thoracic surgery.

And despite the challenges of the two-year-long COVID-19 pandemic, Silver Cross continues to advance by bringing new services, facilities and expertise to meet the needs of its patients and the communities they serve.

Last fall, Silver Cross opened a second Urgent Care Center, this one located in Mokena. In January, the hospital finished construction on its future Amy, Matthew and Jay Vana Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This 24-bed NICU, located on the third floor and adjacent to the hospital’s birthing center, will be the first and only NICU in Will County when it opens later this summer.

In March, Silver Cross made a significant investment in early lung cancer diagnosis and treatment through the addition of an ION robotic bronchoscopy platform. The hospital also hired a lung cancer nurse navigator, who helps patients with a lung cancer diagnosis get their tests done, their appointments scheduled, their surgeries completed, and their rehabilitation started.

In April, the hospital earned its 15th Straight A from the Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization focused on preventing errors, accidents, injuries and infections in U.S. hospitals.

And later this summer, Silver Cross will open 24 additional medical-surgical beds on the fifth and sixth floors of its new expansion on the east side of the hospital.

Recognition as one of the Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals demonstrates Silver Cross Hospital’s ongoing commitment to prioritize patient-centered care. According to Merative, as compared to similar hospitals, the hospitals included on the Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals list had better results on key clinical and operational performance indicators. These include survival rates, patient complications, healthcare associated infections, 30-day mortality and 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates, length of stay, throughput in emergency departments, inpatient expenses, profitability and ratings from patients.

The Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals lists also incorporates a community health measure into its ranking process. For the community health measure, hospitals were surveyed across three components:  1) assessing hospital contributions to community health as a provider of critical services for community health and preventive care; 2) identifying ways that hospitals contribute to community health as a community partner teaming up with local organizations to implement critical programs; and 3) focusing on ways that hospitals promote community health through their practices as anchor institutions supporting local economic and social progress. The community health measure is weighted equally with other ranking measures.
