Medical Professionals from Around the U.S. Learn from Silver Cross’ Groundbreaking Endoscopic Program
While locals have known Silver Cross Hospital as a stalwart of the medical community for more than 125 years, they may not be aware the New Lenox-based hospital also is well known among the national and regional medical community in various specialties.
One of those is advanced endoscopy, specifically, groundbreaking procedures that enable medical professionals to save more lives and offer a better quality of life for patients.
After a one-year break due to COVID, Dr. Kamran Ayub, Medical Director for Silver Cross’ Advanced Endoscopy Center, and his team recently hosted “Advanced Endoscopy for Doctors, Nurses, and Associates with Live Demonstrations.”
Sponsored by Illinois Endoscopy Society, a not-for-profit organization, the two-day program this past fall drew a total more than 110 doctors and nurses from Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana.
In addition to Dr. Ayub and his team -- Jessica Poad, PA-C, MMS, Course Co-Director, and Leah Alles, PA-C, MMS, Course Coordinator, Vice President of Illinois Endoscopy Society – presenters came from several Illinois and Ohio hospitals, as well as those from Florida and California.
“I came from Seattle 10 years ago, and I did such programs there,” Dr. Ayub said, “So, I wanted to start it up when I came here. The idea is to present more intriguing topics in endoscopy, such as endoscopic cystogastrostomy with necrosectomy to treat pancreatic pseudocysts and the use of endoscopic ultrasound to diagnose and stage gastrointestinal cancers, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP, a procedure that combines upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and X-rays to treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts.”
A popular part of the weekend is the second day, when Dr. Ayub with the help of Poad and Alles show video demonstrations of those and other procedures, such as Photodynamic Therapy, PDT, to treat esophageal cancer.
“These procedures help save lives and also offer a longer, better quality of life,” Dr. Ayub said. “Silver Cross Hospital is one of the few in the nation offering these cutting-edge procedures.”
“Programs like this put Silver Cross on the map for offering procedures many other hospitals do not.”
