High Heels and Your Health: The Pain is Real!

We’ve all heard the expression “beauty is pain.” And for working women, especially those who like to sport high heels, this pain is all too familiar.

high heelsAn internal medicine specialist with Silver Cross Medical Group in New Lenox, Dr. Reshma Relwani weighs in on the health impacts of shoes that often mean form over function for most women.

“It’s important to recognize how your choices affect your body and what you can do to offset them,” she explains. For women who swear by their stylish kicks, Dr. Relwani offers up some helpful information and advice.

As an osteopathic doctor, she approaches health problems from a holistic perspective. Women who wear high heels also complain of aches in their lower back, shoulders, and neck. “This has to do with alignment. Putting stress and pressure on the feet inherently affects other muscles in the body that are connected.”

For those of us who simply can’t ditch the high heels, here are a few tips from Dr. Relwani for happier feet.

1. Stretch.

After a long day of standing, the best way to alleviate pain is through stretching. To create an incline, you can place the ball of your foot on the edge of a step or stack of books. Gently lean forward at the waist, and hold for 30 seconds.

2. Look for chunky heels.

Weight is best distributed across a flat surface. Heels that have a thicker platform are not only more comfortable, but can also prevent additional injuries to the foot. Steer clear of stilettos, and avoid that sprained ankle!

3. Find the best fit.

Opt for heels that give you a snug fit with a wide toe box. Excess movement and friction are what cause blisters and more unnecessary pain.

Be sure to keep these pointers in mind when you’re deciding what to put on your feet for work tomorrow. You can trust Dr. Relwani — your feet will thank you!
