Silver Cross Hospital Implements DAISY Award Program to Honor Nursing Staff

Silver Cross Hospital recently implemented the DAISY Award program to honor nurses for exemplary patient care and customer service.

The DAISY Award celebrates the extraordinary compassion nurses provide their patients and families every day. The program is a merit-based award that honors not only great clinical skill and leadership, but especially strong patient care and compassion. Every DAISY nomination includes a story about a nurse tuned in to the patient and family by noticing their needs, and finding a way to really connect and make a difference. 

“We are thrilled to recognize our amazingly talented and caring nursing staff through the DAISY Award program,” said Peggy Gricus, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer for Silver Cross Hospital. “Our hope through the DAISY Award is to inspire our nurses to see the value of their own work. We’ve learned through best practices that when extraordinary care is noticed, it provides an invaluable developmental opportunity for everyone while fostering the best possible care to our patients.”

Each month a deserving nurse will be given the DAISY Award, based on criteria meeting Silver Cross’ mission and values. 

History of the DAISY Award

The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Award —created by the Barnes family to honor their son Patrick, who died of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, an autoimmune disease—is presented by the hospital to nurses who provide compassionate and extraordinary nursing care. Although Pat passed away during his hospitalization, the family wanted to say thank you to his nurses for the compassionate care they provided. That was 18 years ago, and there are now more than 3,300 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 U.S. states and 18 other countries where nurses are honored with The DAISY Award. Indeed, it has become a global standard for recognition of excellence in nursing care.
