Silver Cross Hospital Awarded 5 Star Rating by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, IL was awarded a Five-Star rating – the highest possible score – by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as announced on December 21, 2017 by Medicare.gov on Hospital Compare.
The ratings, published by CMS and designed to help consumers compare hospitals, by evaluating safety, quality and patient experiences at more than 4,000 hospitals nationwide. Silver Cross was one of only nine percent of eligible hospitals in the United States to receive the overall Five-Star rating for 2017. The national average is three out of five stars. Only 20 hospitals in Illinois received five stars and Silver Cross is the only community hospital serving Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties to earn the highest honor.
The hospital rating system, publicly launched in 2016 by CMS, assigns hospitals one to five stars. The overall summary rating is based on a cumulative score from 57 measures across seven different areas, including mortality, readmission, safety of care, patient experience using the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, efficient use of medical imaging, and timeliness and effectiveness of care. Silver Cross performed above the national average in categories of safety of patient care (measuring infection prevention and mortality rates) and patient experiences (measuring items such as physician and nursing communication, pain management, cleanliness of hospitals and more).
“We are proud to be recognized by CMS for our high quality and patient satisfaction scores,” said Ruth Colby, President and CEO at Silver Cross Hospital. “At Silver Cross, we desire to provide our patients with outstanding healthcare each and every day.”
The CMS Five-Star Rating adds to Silver Cross’ other awards, accreditations and recognitions including receiving an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from the Leapfrog Group. The national safety watchdog rates how well hospitals protect patients from errors, infections, and accidents that can cause harm. Silver Cross has received “Straight A’s” six times in a row.
