Baby Basics Class

Parents-to-be and new parents can learn about their baby’s physical care and health, using child care, common problems, stress management and positive child guidance skills at a special one-day Baby Basics Class. This program will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.  Cost is $25 per couple. Birthing Center Tours

Silver Cross Hospital will offer free Birthing Center Tours for expectant families at the hospital, 1900 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. The hour-long tours are offered Sundays at 1:30 p.m. and one Tuesday a month at 7:30 p.m. in the hospital’s luxurious birthing suites. Register at www.silvercross.org 

Breastfeeding Classes

A certified lactation consultant will teach the basics of breastfeeding including establishing a milk supply, breast pumps, avoiding difficulties and more on Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Cost is $15 per person for the one-day class. Register at www.silvercross.org 

Prepared Childbirth Classes

Silver Cross Hospital will offer a two-part weekday Prepared Childbirth Class on Monday, Aug. 19, and Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. All classes will be held in the hospital’s Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Participants will receive instruction from a certified childbirth class instructor on breathing and relaxation. She will also review the labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum, and other birthing options. A tour of the Birthing Unit is included. Cost is $80 per couple. Register at www.silvercross.org 

Obesity & Your Health

Looking to lose weight? Join Drs. Christopher Joyce and Brian Lahmann, experienced gastric bypass surgeons with Bariatric & Minimally Invasive (BMI) Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital, for a free informational session about Obesity & Your Health: Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for You? The program is held on Wednesdays at 5:45 p.m. at BMI Surgery, Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Suite 260, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Learn about the advantages and risks of traditional and laparoscopic bariatric weight loss surgery, including the ReShape® gastric balloon placement, gastric sleeve, and the REALIZE® and LAP-BAND® gastric band systems, and find out who is a candidate for the procedure. American Heart Association’s Healthcare Provider BLS and CPR

Silver Cross Hospital will offer the American Heart Association’s Healthcare Provider BLS and CPR training on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. to 2p.m. in Silver Cross Hospital’s Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. LPNs, RNs, Paramedics, EMTs and CNAs (and students) will learn one and two person infant, child and adult CPR as well as rescue from choking. Participants will receive their American Heart Association certificate at the successful completion of the course. Fee is $65 and includes American Heart Association certification. Blood Pressure Screenings

Silver Cross offers free blood pressure checks daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 W. 143rd St., Homer Glen. Walk-ins welcome. For more information, call (708) 364-6337. 

Calcium Artery Scoring Screening  

Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and the Silver Cross Health Center—Homer Glen offer a quick and painless test using a high-speed CT scanner that can measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to determine your risk of having a heart attack. Calcium artery scoring is ideal for men over age 45 and women over age 55 who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of premature coronary artery disease. Postnatal Physical Therapy Screenings

The Shirley Ryan Ability at Silver Cross offers free postnatal physical therapy screenings for women six weeks to one-year post-delivery and who are experiencing pelvic or perineal pain, urinary or fecal incontinencepelvic organ prolapse or separation of the abdominal muscles. Screenings take place at the Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 W. 143rd St., Homer Glen. During the 15-minute exam, a new mom’s birthing history and current problems will be reviewed. Women’s Pelvic Health Consultation

Women experiencing urinary incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency, pelvic pain, bowel incontinence, constipation, or painful intercourse can meet with a physical therapist specializing in pelvic health issues at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab at Silver Cross—located at 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., Pavilion A, First Floor. Bariatric Support Group

Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with BMI Surgery hosts a free Bariatric Support Group for individuals who have undergone weight loss surgery. The meeting will be held Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Baby Bereavement Support Group

Silver Cross Hospital offers a support group for parents who have experienced loss during pregnancy, at birth or shortly after, or from early Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Baby Bereavement Support Group will meet Thursday, Aug. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., Pavilion A, New Lenox. Breastfeeding Support Group

The Silver Cross Birthing Center’s certified lactation consultants will host a free breastfeeding support group meeting on Friday, Aug. 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the hospital’s Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. New mothers have many questions and concerns about breastfeeding in the weeks leading up to and after birth. The Breastfeeding Support Group is a way to exchange information and experiences. Infants are welcome to attend. First-time participants should register in advance at www.silvercross.org 

Stroke Support Group

Stroke survivor’s family members and caregivers are welcome to attend the Silver Cross Neuroscience Institute’s Stroke Support Group. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and 28, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Breast Cancer Support Group

The American Cancer Society and Silver Cross Hospital will host I Can Cope, an educational program for women facing breast cancer, on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Silver Cross Hospital Conference Center, Pavilion A, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. This free program covers topics relevant to the cancer experience and offers practical help in coping with some of the emotional issues resulting from a cancer diagnosis.  First time participants should visit www.silvercross.org to register to attend.
