When should I go to the Emergency Department?
Did you know many health problems and medical conditions don’t require a trip to the emergency department?
Cold and flu symptoms, minor cuts and sprains and other conditions can often be treated in your doctor’s office. You’ll receive the same great care and save time and money over a trip to the emergency department (ED).
Why call your physician or practice instead of going to the emergency department?
- You’ll likely have a much lower copay (but always check with your plan for actual costs)
- You’ll likely experience shorter wait times or be able to get in right away
- Your personal doctor, who knows you and your health history, is the best person to ensure you receive the right care at the right time from the right providers
- Morning, evening and weekend office hours make getting care more convenient
When should I use the emergency department?
Always call 911 first if you feel your condition is life threatening
If you do utilize the emergency department, by choosing Silver Cross Hospital, your doctor can manage your follow-up care. Your doctor will be notified of your
ER visit and will have access to your medical records after being discharged from the emergency department.
