Cancer Committee Report for FY 13

(Oct. 2012 - Sept. 2013)

Purpose:To provide health education on cancer  and access to screenings to the community to reduce diagnosis of late stage cancers (skin, breast, prostate) and encourage healthy behaviors to reduce common risk factors associated with cancer. Screenings are performed under evidence-based national guidelines and promoted based on identified community need.

Community Outreach activities are detailed in Standards 4.1 and 4.2.  In addition, Silver Cross Hospital continues to promote cancer prevention, screening and treatment through the following communication channels (samples available upon request):

Breast Cancer Support Group

  • Held monthly in Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health
  • Partnership with American Cancer Society
  • 14 new members joined in FY13 

Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk

  • Oct. 7, 2012 in Joliet
  • Oct. 14, 2012 in Orland Park
  • Silver Cross sponsored a team of 20 individuals at each event to raise awareness of breast cancer 

Beyond the Pink Ribbon

  • Oct. 30, 2012 at Silver Cross Hospital
  • Speakers: Dr. Anne McCall, radiation oncologist and Dr. Sunil Narula, hematologist/oncologist
  • Discussion on risk factors, early detection and new drug therapies for breast cancer
  • 2 screening mammograms were given as door prizes
  • 11 enrolled 

Take Charge: Control Your Colon

  • Nov. 14, 2012 at Silver Cross Hospital
  • Speaker:  Dr. Nikhil Bhargava, gastroenterologist
  • 13 individuals enrolled 

Free Men’s Prostate Health Event

  • Jan. 22, 2013 at Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox
  • Silver Cross Hospital, The American Urological Association Foundation and the NFL teamed  up to talk about prostate cancer screening, prevention, and treatment
  • Speakers:  Dan Hampton, NFL Hall of Famer, and Dr. Thai Nguyen, urologist
  • Over 250 individuals attended the event
  • Participants received prostate cancer prevention and screening information
  • 73 men registered at the event for a free prostate cancer screening with a urologist that took place on Feb. 2 at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital.  11 patients had an abnormal PSA requiring follow-up with a physician 

Burning Your Heartburn & Preventing Esophageal Cancer

  • Feb. 25, 2013 at Silver Cross Hospital
  • Presented by Dr. Kamran Ayub, gastroenterologist
  • 64 enrolled 

Oncoplastic & Breast Surgery

  • May 13, 2013 at Silver Cross Hospital
  • Speaker:  Dr. Patricia Clark, general surgeon
  • 4 individuals enrolled 

Cancer Survivor’s Event

  • June 23, 2013 at Silver Cross Field in Joliet
  • Over 100 patients, staff and family members attended
  • Information about cancer prevention was distributed at the Silver Cross kiosk and PSAs were read by the Joliet Slammers announcers throughout the event 

Standard 4:2  Prevention Screenings

Colon Cancer Screening Kits

  • Distributed throughout the year at community events. Kits can also be requested through our 24/7 bi-lingual call center and through the website:
  • 432 kits distributed in FY13
  • 12 were positive and received a letter and phone call from Silver Cross Hospital recommending follow-up with patient’s physician. If no physician, referred to free referral service. 

Prostate Cancer Screenings

  • Feb. 2, 2013 at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital
  • 73 men were screened by a urologist
  • 11 patients had an abnormal PSA requiring follow-up with a physician 
  • Sept. 12, 2013 at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital
  • 62 men were screened by a urologist
  • 12 patients had an abnormal PSA requiring follow-up with a physician 

Skin Cancer Screenings

  • May, 2, 9 and 16, 2013 at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital
  • 126 individuals screened by a dermatologist
  • Patients with suspicious lesions were given copy of screening report and referred to the dermatologist that performed the screening
  • ADA certified screenings, prevention literature 

$100 Mammogram Screenings

  • Offered in Oct-Nov, 2012 and May-June 2013 in the Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health
  • Performed in a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR)
  • Results sent to patient’s primary care physician for follow-up
  • 236 Total= 182 (Oct-Dec), 54 (May-June)
