Silver Cross Receives $100,000 Garden Gift
Longtime Joliet resident and Silver Cross Hospital volunteer, May B. Lloyd, gave Silver Cross Hospital and Medical Centers a $100,000 gift to fund the new Serenity Garden, located outside the Arthur and Vera Smith Pavilion at Silver Cross, and to establish an endowed account for the maintenance of the garden and other Silver Cross landscape.
This gift will honor and pay tribute to May and her late husband George. The garden will be named the George P. and May B. Lloyd Serenity Garden.
George served on Silver Cross Hospital's Board of Directors from 1949 to 1988 and was President of the Board from 1967 to 1979. In addition, the Investment Broker served as the first President of the Silver Cross Foundation and was past president of boards for the Richard B. Vance and Company, Investment Securities, YMCA, Joliet Rotary Club, the Joliet Will County Community Chest and the University of Iowa Foundation. May is a longtime member of Silver Cross' Celebrity Spotlight, which raises money to support the Lifeline Program, an emergency response system used in the home.
The Serenity Garden is the result of a volunteer committee chaired by former Silver Cross employee, and Lockport resident Peg Kramer.
The serenity garden was designed as a place for visitors to seek solitude, beauty and fresh air while visiting or waiting for loved ones. It is also a place for staff to get away and be restored. In the garden you will find sensory plants that will mature to provide herbal smells; assorted tactile plants of varying heights‹accessible for patients in wheelchairs, the elderly and children; and the soothing sounds of running water.
The Serenity Garden is located outside the Arthur and Vera Smith Pavilion. This remarkable 92,000 square foot, three-story building is the latest initiative to advancing world-class health care. Named for Arthur and Vera Smith, dedicated and generous friends of Silver Cross, the new facility, will include surgical services, dialysis and outpatient health care to the surrounding communities.
