Joliet approves plan for VA clinic

JOLIET — The creation of a future veterans clinic in Joliet took a small step forward this week.

The Joliet City Council approved a development plan that allows the Department of Veterans Affairs to take over a section of Silver Cross Hospital for the clinic.

Silver Cross is moving to New Lenox later this month, and the sale of the hospital’s emergency facility to the VA is slated to be completed in March.

The renovation of the emergency facility into the VA clinic is expected to take 12 to 13 months.

The opening of the clinic has been estimated for early 2013.

The development plan approved by the council provides for:

A two-story clinic with 60,000 square feet of space.

A divider wall separating the clinic from the remainder of the hospital building.

A 3.2-acre lot that will include the clinic building and parking.

A second lot of less than an acre for additional parking.

In other business at its meetings on Monday and Tuesday, the council:

Agreed to continue the existing boundary agreement with Plainfield until 2017. The Plainfield Village Board this week also voted to extend the agreement, which has been in place since 1990.

Voted unanimously to extend the firefighter eligibility list for another year. The list would be used to hire any new firefighter-paramedics. City officials said the cost to develop a new list, including recruitment and testing, would be more than $100,000.

Approved spending $20,287 for Joliet’s contribution to the Lower DuPage River Wathershed Coalition, a group of municipalities along the river that band together to deal with issues of water quality and to pursue grant money for water projects.

Heard from City Manager Thomas Thanas that negotiations continue with the Joliet Park District over a city exit strategy regarding Splash Station Waterpark. The city is interested in making a one-time payment to the park district. In exchange, the park district would take over payments on the bonds used to finance construction of the water park in 2002.

Silver Cross touts new heart facility

NEW LENOX — Since February is designated as American Heart Month, Silver Cross is excited to offer heart patients a variety of cardiac services at the new hospital opening Feb. 26 at Interstate 355 and Route 6.

The new Silver Cross Cardiac Cath Lab is on the Procedural Care Unit, offering streamlined care and advanced technology.

The PCU is the consolidation of surgery, interventional cardiology and radiology, and endoscopy procedures into one integrated area.

Located on the second floor of the replacement hospital, each of these areas is adjacent to the PCU Family Lounge and also has many private pre- and post-procedural rooms.

In addition, the lab is equipped with a new Philips Angiography System, offering the latest innovations in diagnostic and interventional cardiac care for patients with coronary artery disease.

“This minimally invasive approach to cardiac care allows for quicker healing for patients, many of whom can go home the same day of their procedure,” said Brendan Casey, manager of Cardiology and Interventional Radiology at Silver Cross Hospital.

Silver Cross boasts the following:

A Cardiac Rehab program that is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehab.

A diagnostic echocardiography program certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories.

A tour of the Cardiac Cath Lab and other areas of the new Silver Cross Hospital will be available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Community Housewarming Party.
