- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Don’t smoke.
- Stay hydrated. Drink 8 glasses of water a day.
- Build a strong social network of family and friends.
- Participate in physical and mental activities every day.
- Eat a healthy diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, and substitute healthier monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats for unhealthy saturated fats and trans fats.
- See a dentist regularly and be sure to floss regularly.
- Constantly challenge your mind. Keep learning and trying new activities.
- Ask your doctor if medication can help you control the long-term side effects of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, osteoporosis, or high cholesterol.

Dr. Deirdra Greathouse-Williams is a board certified family practice physician. She recently joined C & R Medical Group located on the Silver Cross Hospital campus in New Lenox. She earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Medicine and was Chief Resident at Cook County, Loyola Provident Department of Family Practice.
